The School of Economics (SoE) at Devi Ahilya University, established in 1976, began as the University Teaching Department (UTD) within the Faculty of Social Science. It initially offered traditional economics programs: M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. Since 1991, in response to India's economic reforms, SoE expanded its offerings to include professional MBA programs in International Business, Business Economics, and Financial Services. In 2019, it introduced an undergraduate B.A. (Hons.) in Economics.
SoE is renowned for its research and teaching excellence, supported by multiple UGC Special Assistance Programme phases and the UGC Centre with Potential for Excellence award. It has also been recognized as a Centre for Excellence in Teaching & Research by the Government of Madhya Pradesh. Additionally, the institute hosts a Chair on Decentralized Planning and Micro-Economic Governance and has been awarded the UGC-STRIDE Programme for trans-disciplinary research. The faculty are involved in various research projects and community service, particularly focused on tribal areas.
